Statement

My interest in art began early. As a child, I'd spend more time illustrating my school books than writing in them and at home you could usually find me knitting, sewing, drawing or painting. Later, this passion would guide me through a BA and MA in Textiles. Both experiences were thoroughly rewarding; the MA at Goldsmiths was particularly enriching, allowing me to explore my interest in the conceptual use of textiles in a fine art context.

The focus of my current practice is on temporary artwork and events. My largest scale intervention to date was a commission by Hull Arts Lab for Light Night - a night of illumination in the city. With a team of helpers, I installed 900 tiny, temporary lights in a darkened underpass. Giving the illusion of flattening the deep space, this ambitious installation invited the audience to linger in a place they would usually hurry through, offering them a fresh perspective on the modern urban landscape. By contrast, my ongoing Wish Ribbon events revive the ancient custom of tying rags into trees to bring love, luck, healing or success; everyday textiles are thus imbued with meaning and desires become visible and tangible.

Workshops

I can provide a range of workshops, from one-day events to longer duration projects and courses. I have broad experience working with children and adults of all ages, from primary through to older groups. I also provide INSET sessions and lead gallery visits for schools.

Each workshop is tailored to your individual needs, bringing new techniques and materials into the classroom. My workshops are original, experimental, innovative and above all enjoyable. I am constantly trying out new ideas to make art relevant to children's lives, using contemporary works as inspiration.

I hold a current enhanced CRB check and am happy to provide information if you wish to do your own check. I have Public Liability Insurance.

Here are some of the comments I received from Y4 children in Newham after Tate Britain's VerbalEyes project:

  • "I have been planting, making gigantic flowers, doing magic trees. I have been writing beautiful and rhyming poems" Arafat
  • "We have been looking at artists wonderful work and that artists don't just need to be doing their art on paper and that they can be doing it anywhere they like" Anoushka
  • "Collages are really fun. Also flower arranging is really fun and really easy. Also working with Tate Britain has been really rewarding" Ruhi
